Use `--language` to specify the language Detected language: English [00:00.960 --> 00:06.960] If you spend a lot of time watching the media, you probably would think right now SARS-CoV-2 is so [00:06.960 --> 00:10.480] bad that as you walk from the grocery store through the parking lot out to your car, [00:10.480 --> 00:15.280] you almost have to step over dead bodies. As we approach the end of the summer surge, [00:15.280 --> 00:21.520] government and media are doing their very best to scare everyone into getting vaccinated. [00:22.240 --> 00:27.200] I don't judge a person for getting vaccinated or not getting vaccinated. It's a personal choice. [00:27.200 --> 00:33.680] However, as with any choice that impacts your health, it should be made from knowledge, [00:33.680 --> 00:37.680] not from fear. There are many different data sets you can look at to make that [00:37.680 --> 00:41.840] decision for yourself. Today, I'm going to share one I think is important. [00:41.840 --> 01:05.760] A new preprint study came out on July 8, 2021, updating IFR numbers. As you can imagine, [01:05.760 --> 01:10.160] a study relying on 18 months of data is going to be a lot more factual, a lot more realistic [01:10.720 --> 01:15.920] than the IFR numbers that were thrown around earlier with only a few months of data. [01:16.720 --> 01:21.200] Those numbers didn't seem very credible at the time, and this new study bears that out. [01:22.560 --> 01:33.360] What is IFR? Infection Fatality Rate. IFR is a means of looking at the estimated total number [01:33.360 --> 01:40.800] of infections in a community and then judging the deaths within the total number of infections in [01:40.800 --> 01:48.560] that community. In contrast to that is the case fatality rate. The case fatality rate, CFR, [01:48.560 --> 01:54.320] is where they take the number of identified infections and they look at the number of deaths [01:54.320 --> 01:58.400] within that pool. As you probably were, if you've been watching me for any length of time, [01:58.400 --> 02:04.960] the number of identified infections is a very small fraction of the number of total infections. [02:04.960 --> 02:10.560] So when you look at total deaths within a small community of only identified infections, [02:10.560 --> 02:18.240] you're not really getting a realistic useful number. Conversely, IFR does give you that [02:18.240 --> 02:24.480] realistic useful number. Research for producing the correct IFR numbers relies heavily on [02:24.480 --> 02:30.240] seroprevalence. In other words, they use antibody testing a lot, and once the researchers have their [02:30.240 --> 02:34.640] seroprevalence numbers fixed, then they take a look at the deaths within that same community, [02:34.640 --> 02:41.520] that same pool, and that gives them and us the IFR. The new study we're talking about fixes the IFR [02:41.520 --> 02:48.000] per age range. So for instance, 0 to 19 and 20 to 29 and so forth. So let's take a look and see what [02:48.000 --> 03:02.080] the IFR is for each of the age groups. The first one, 0 to 19, the IFR is 0.0027. [03:02.080 --> 03:07.760] Okay, let me translate that to be clear in case people are a little wee bit math challenged. [03:07.760 --> 03:16.000] That is not even, does not even reach three one thousandths of one percent. By the way, [03:16.000 --> 03:22.000] this is worldwide. They looked at, I think, more than 14 countries, and what they came up with was [03:22.000 --> 03:26.880] within this pool, total 100 percent of the people who have been infected, the percentage of people [03:26.880 --> 03:37.680] who can be expected to die, to perish from COVID-19 does not even reach three one thousandths of one [03:37.680 --> 03:48.480] percent in this 0 to 19 age range. The next group, 20 to 29 years of age, the IFR is 0.014 or [03:49.280 --> 04:03.120] 1.4 one hundredths of one percent. I know, terrifying, right? 30 to 39, 0.031 percent, [04:03.680 --> 04:18.080] three one hundredths of one percent. 40 to 49, 0.082 percent, which is eight one hundredths [04:18.720 --> 04:30.320] of one percent. Again, terrifying. 50 to 59, 0.27 percent, less than three tenths of one percent. [04:30.320 --> 04:40.160] And 60 to 69, 0.59, roughly six tenths of one percent. I should mention these numbers I'm [04:40.160 --> 04:45.840] sharing with your averages as an example. The numbers were a wee bit higher in high [04:45.840 --> 04:50.480] income nations because personal lifestyle choices in those high income nations [04:51.200 --> 04:57.440] were less healthy or more unhealthy, which is really sort of odd when you think about you're [04:57.440 --> 05:02.560] very, very fortunate, you're in a high income country, and you actually make decisions that [05:02.560 --> 05:09.280] are less healthy, and therefore you have a greater chance of dying. As we went through the list, [05:09.280 --> 05:14.560] I don't know if you noticed, we're talking about zero all the way through age 69, I don't know if [05:14.560 --> 05:21.680] you noticed. Not a single one of those age groups, the IFR, reaches even one percent, [05:22.320 --> 05:29.520] the highest one being approximately one half of one percent. And this is what government and [05:29.520 --> 05:36.560] media want you to fear. Do these IFR numbers I just shared with you indicate that you should [05:36.560 --> 05:40.880] or should not get vaccinated? I don't know. That's not my decision to make. It's yours. [05:40.960 --> 05:48.000] However, I do think it's a significant data set to have under your belt if and when you make the [05:48.000 --> 05:54.000] decision to get vaccinated. If you appreciate this sort of data-driven presentation, help me [05:54.000 --> 06:00.160] continue to be here for you.
